Line scan cameras, sometimes known as 1D cameras are widely used in web inspection application, such as printing, PCB, when application requires very high resolution, and demanding lighting geometry. Line Scan Cameras

A typical Line scan camera has only a single row of pixels used to capture data very quickly.

However , with the ever increasing demands of line scan cameras, different multiple line scan cameras emerges to address to need in higher sensitivities, or speed , or separation of spectral information ( Colour cameras), but the principle of how a line scan system work remains the same.

As the object moves past the camera, ( or cameras scan along an object) a complete image can be reconstructed in software line by line.

Line scan systems are best employed in high-speed processing or fast-moving conveyor line applications.

With a single row of pixels, line scan cameras can build continuous images not limited to a vertical resolution, thus the image size is only limited by one axis, and has to flexibility to configure for virtually unlimited vertical resolution( limit only by the PC resource) This allows for much higher possible resolutions compare to area scan cameras.

Unlike area scan cameras, a line scan system can start processing of images continuously while the cameras is still capturing on the same parts without missing any part, making it superior in continuous web inspection.

Movement synchronisation are critical for line scan system,

Individual line are expose independently and sequentially, leaving only little time for exposure, line scan system are always hungry for light intensity. However system lighting design is often much simpler compare to area scan.

ELiiXA+ 4k/8k 

Thanks to e2v’s recently developed multi-line CMOS technology, the camera provides an unmatched 100,000 lines/s and combines high response with an extremely low noise level; this delivers high signal to noise ratio even when short integration times are required or when illumination is limited.The 5μm pixel size is arranged in four active lines, ensuring optimal spatial resolution in both scanning and sensor directions with standard F-mount lenses.

ELiiXA+ 16k 

e2v’s next generation of line scan cameras are setting new, high standards for line rate and image quality. Thanks to e2v’s recently developed multi-line CMOS technology, the ELiiXA+ 16K monochrome camera provides an unmatched 140,000 lines/s in a 16k pixel format and 200,000 lines/s in 11k resolution. It also combines high response with an extremely low noise level; this delivers high signal to noise ratio even when short integration times are required or when illumination is limited. The 5µm pixel size is arranged in four active lines, ensuring optimal spatial resolution in both scanning and sensor directions with ‘off-the-shelf’ lenses. An outstanding data rate in excess of 1.6G pixels/s (delivered via a new CoaXPress interface), allows for extremely high throughput and opens up an array of new possibilities for the next generation of inspection systems for demanding applications such as flat panel display, PCB and solar cell inspection.  The new high-speed ELiiXA+ cameras are also customisable to fit multiple applications: a high dynamic range mode enables high contrast materials imaging e.g. for  high reflectivity metallic surfaces inspection.
